Bicycle Colorado Asking for Bicycle Projects in Stimulus Package
bike laneThe Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has presented a sample list of ready-to-go projects for Congress as they look at an additional economic stimulus package for job creation through funding transportation projects. The sample project list includes $1.1 billion in road projects and $144 million in transit projects but no real mention of the state's unfunded bicycle or pedestrian projects.

Bicycle Colorado has requested that CDOT also gather a list of bicycle and pedestrian projects that are ready to go but need funding. For example, in the Denver region alone, over $45 million in bike/ped projects went unfunded in the last application cycle.

So that projects that are important to you aren't overlooked, please let us know of any bike projects in your area which are ready to go but just need funding. Please submit it through our web form and we will use them to show the need for investment in bicycling. Transportation planners and engineers also are welcome to send lists.

Governor Signs Pact to Cut Emissions -- Will Bikes Play a Role?
bike commutersGov. Bill Ritter recently signed a pact with governors from 12 other states pledging to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Burning fossil fuels for transportation is significant source of Colorado's emissions. Increasing trips made by bicycle trips produce zero emissions and could to play a significant role fulfilling the governor's pledge.

Bicycle Colorado is asking that this pact help lead to transportation improvements which encourage more trips by bicycling. Colorado has no statewide bicycle policy, currently spends no state-generated transportation funds on bicycling and spends less than 1% of federal transportation funds.

Bike Safety in Numbers
Shared bike-traffic lanesA national report released by Rails to Trails Conservancy shows those communities that design bicycle-friendly infrastructure increases bicyclist safety. The study details that dedicated bicycle facilities increase the number of bicyclists while injuries and fatalities due to crashes decrease.

Infrastructure investments are clearly an effective and necessary measure to increase the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. Additional measures, such as education of motorized and non-motorized traffic participants, and various forms of traffic regulations can further improve safety.
